The majority of people prefer to take their medications orally. Numerous factors are crucial to the advancement of the medication distribution system. The drug delivery system has developed over time, and one component that has evolved is polymers. Molecules that consist of several monomer units connected by bonds are known as polymers. As an added bonus, floating drug delivery systems (FDDS) work well with medications that are mainly absorbed in the upper parts of the GI tract, which includes the stomach, duodenum, and jejunum. The goal of this review was to provide a comprehensive overview of floating drug delivery systems (FDDS), including the various forms of FDDS, the principles and mechanisms of floating to achieve gastric retention, and the polymers utilised in these systems. The origin of the polymers utilised in the medication delivery system determines whether they are synthetic or natural. The two varieties of polymers each have their own set of benefits and drawbacks. A variety of natural and synthetic polymers are detailed in this article, each with their own unique role in the drug delivery system. The article makes note of natural polymers such as guar gum, chitosan, xanthan gum, Gellan gum, and sodium alginate. Ethylcellulose, HPMC, and Eudragit are the synthetic polymers that were suggested.
